We are a network of schools inspired by the Sudbury Valley School model, providing a platform for sharing, collaboration, and support within the self-directed learning community.
Sudbury International is a network that connects and supports schools inspired by the Sudbury Valley School model—a model that has been around for over half a century and has been interpreted in many different ways across the world. We are not a franchise, an accrediting body, or a rulebook. Instead, we provide:
A space for Sudbury schools
to connect and learn from each other
A platform to share
the many ways people practice self-directed education
Sudbury International is a diverse group of schools and learning centers. Although we can all trace our origins, directly or indirectly, back to Sudbury Valley School (est. 1968), we each have a slightly different take on what it means to be "Sudbury."
Instead of trying to define Sudbury, we've compiled a list of articles by founders and staff members of various schools and centers, who each define Sudbury in their own words. Reading these articles, you'll find there are many core themes and practices that show up again and again.
Upcoming Events
Join us for a live roundtable discussion with graduates from four different Sudbury schools as they share their experiences, insights, and the impact of self-directed learning on their lives.
This is your chance to hear firsthand how Sudbury alumni navigate higher education, careers, and personal growth—without traditional grades, tests, or a set curriculum.
The event will feature an introduction by Dr. Peter Gray, research professor at Boston College and author of Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life.
The event is interactive, so bring your questions! Whether you're a curious parent, educator, or student, this is a rare opportunity to engage directly with those who’ve lived the Sudbury experience. This free event is open to all—help us spread the word to anyone who might be interested!
